iWebSites 2.4 beta
(April 15, 2008)

A number of people have emailed to tell me about a problem they have had opening sites with iWebSites. I think I've fixed the issue, and now it should work correctly (i.e., double-clicking on a site will actually open it!)

(January 27, 2008)

I finally was able to find some time to work on the "merge" function of iWebSites, and it seems to be working. A big thanks to Ken McCaw for helping me troubleshoot the feature. I haven't been able to test it out for all types of sites, so if you do try to merge your iWeb '08 sites and it doesn't work, please let me know at tofer@mistergregg.com. I still recommend backing up your /Users/username/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder frequently. The download link for iWebSites is to the right.

In other news, a friend asked me to work on a little "Countdown" application, which basically counts down to a date (as in, your retirement date, or someone's birthday, etc.). It is still very much in beta mode, but here it is. (Tip: You can drag a picture onto the default picture to change it):

Countdown 0.6 (beta)

Any suggestions regarding it would be welcome (and I plan to add a lot more features).

Note for those using .Mac accounts:
A number of users found out that it is a bit tricky using multiple websites with .Mac accounts.  I don’t actually have a .Mac account myself, so I was at a bit of a loss as to how to help them.  One very helpful user, Robert Stewart, passed on this information, in two parts:

“Here’s the answer to the question, how to upload multiple .mac websites: please include in your instructions for .mac users.

1. Open idisk
2. Locate the folder “web”
3. You will see a folder called “sites” open this.
4. Within this folder you will see iPhoto & iWeb folders. Open the “iWeb”Folder
5. In the “iWeb” Folder you will see your default domain site (this is the site that loads by default at your .mac address. ..i.e.
http://web.mac.com/username  - notice no site name)
6. In the iWeb folder this is where you place your “Exported Website from iWeb”. The name of the website is the name of the folder you place it in. ..i.e. If you name the folder of your exported iWeb site “CMC” then the .mac address for your site will be:

http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/CMC/

Something else I just figured out is that the case (being upper or lower) is important in how you type the url or the site.

http://web.mac.com/username/iweb/CMC will work as this is how I labeled the folder as Upper Case, I realized though it is best to keep your names in lower case as that is how most people will type url’s.

Please also note that your application documentation should state that for users of .mac accounts the program will always replace the default website you upload directly from iWeb, to load more than one site to iWeb and keep the domains separate you must export all other domains to a folder and the upload as described. (this is key). I found this out by reading a review of the app on Macworlds website.

Why does iWebSites exist?

When Apple introduced its clever iLife web design software, iWeb, they left out one important feature: the ability to load and save multiple web sites.  There isn’t even an “Open” menu item under the File Menu!  You can create multiple “sites” that are somewhat independent of each other, but they still exist as one file (”Domains.sites”) and cannot be separately uploaded onto different web servers or into different .Mac accounts.

iWebSites rectifies this by manipulating the files in the directory where iWeb keeps its website files, and allows users to have multiple websites that are completely independent of each other.  iWebSites creates new sites, duplicates sites you already have, sets the “default site” for iWeb, and allows you to delete sites.  Hopefully, Apple will include this feature in subsequent releases of iWeb, but until then please enjoy this little application, and if you have questions, comments, or concerns, please e-mail me:
